Women go through various hormonal phases and transitional periods in their lives. These changes can be unsettling and have a number of mental and physical consequences.

Hormone yoga aims to make these transitions easier and alleviate side effects and symptoms. It was developed to balance the problems associated with the menopause. However, it can also be very relevant in other contexts and age groups.

Hormone yoga (or hormonal yoga therapy) is very effective and can bear fruit after a very short time if practised regularly.

Symptoms such as osteoporosis, dry mucous membranes, headaches, joint pain, weight gain and cardiovascular problems are alleviated. The hormonal shift or deficiency that occurs during menopause often brings with it emotional symptoms such as irritability, inner restlessness and depressive moods. Hormone yoga can bring about a significant improvement in general mood and well-being.

Difference between Hatha Yoga and Hormone Yoga

Classical Hatha Yoga focuses primarily on the musculoskeletal system, breathing, metabolism and the nervous system. In contrast, hormone yoga is more dynamic and works on the energy body (building and stabilising Prana) in a sustainable way. Prana is the life energy that becomes more fragile and decreases with age. Prana is built up and directed to the organs and glands (especially the ovaries, pituitary gland, adrenal glands and thyroid gland), which play a key role in hormone balance. The aim is therefore to either increase hormone levels again or keep them stable. This method is designed to be gentle, without side effects. However, it is important to note that the exercises should not be performed during menstruation or if you have a pre-existing condition for which an increase in oestrogen levels is not recommended (e.g. breast cancer or endometriosis).

Hormone yoga was developed by Dinah Rodrigues (psychologist and yoga teacher from Sao Paulo) and uses classic yoga exercises (including pranayama/breathing exercises), Kundalini techniques and Tibetan energising techniques.

Hormonal yoga therapy is a holistic and rejuvenating technique.
