Ayurvedic morning routine
As part of daily oral hygiene, Ayurveda recommends using a tongue scraper first thing in the morning. The condition of the tongue represents the state of the digestive system and plaque indicates a disturbed digestive fire (Agni). It is therefore recommended to cleanse the tongue in the morning to remove the deposits that have accumulated overnight.
Then put a tablespoon of cold-pressed, matured sesame oil (alternatively: olive or coconut oil) in your mouth and slowly pull it between your teeth. After about 5 minutes, spit the oil out again. You can then put a second spoonful of oil in your mouth to gargle; this has a particularly beneficial effect on the throat and tonsils. Then rinse your mouth well with warm water and brush your teeth.
Benefits
This “oil pulling” removes metabolic residues (Ama) in the area of the so-called “Waldeyer’s tonsillar ring” – the first and important lymphatic system of the digestive tract in the mouth and throat area. According to Ayurveda, Gandusha also strengthens the gums, prevents tooth decay and periodontal disease, has an antibacterial, antiviral and fungicidal effect –, preventing fungi, and thus keeping the oral cavity and throat healthy.
After oral hygiene, it is also recommended to dab two drops of sesame oil into each nostril to keep the mucous membranes moist and free of pathogens.
Gandusha is suitable for all Dosha types.
