This routine can be done right after getting up to relax the body and stimulate the metabolism.
In the winter, the body accumulates the Kapha Dosha due to a rich diet, lack of exercise, and the cold and wet weather. As a result, we often feel tired, sluggish and lethargic.
This morning yoga routine – the ”8 movements of the spine“ – helps to reduce Kapha and to start the morning calmly but with vigour by stretching and relaxing the whole body and stimulating our Agni (digestive fire).
The sequence
- Upward salute: inhale.
- Standing side stretch: exhale, bend to the side, inhale to the centre. Repeat on the other side.
- Standing spinal twist: exhale, turn to the side. Inhale, turn to the centre and exhale, turn to the other side.
- Standing back bend: exhale, bend backwards and inhale, back to centre.
- Forward fold: exhale, bend forwards. Inhale, raise one arm to the ceiling and look up, exhale, lower arm. Repeat on the other side.
- Half forward fold: inhale, arms stretched.
- Squat: exhale.
- Upward salute: inhale, stand upright and stretch.
Each pose should be done as slowly as possible. You can carry out 2 to 5 rounds of the sequence as required.
